Stories from
the watchful eye

Welcome to your little crash course on our family and the farm we call home! The lake, a source of endless summer joy, has played a significant role in our lives. Most of our stories revolve around our Poppie, Bill George Sr. who is the heart and soul of the farm and our family. The farm is a beloved retreat for many, so embrace the warmth and welcome; this is a place where everyone belongs.

AMIDST THE STORM

In the past, lake patrol duties fell on the shoulders of lakeshore farmers and homeowners rather than the coast guard. In his younger days, Poppie kept a watchful eye on the water, scanning the shores for danger. Amidst darkening skies, he spotted a distressed woman in a boat through his binoculars. Without hesitation, he braved the stormy lake, rescuing a distraught woman whose husband had drowned. Heartbroken, she revealed her husband’s tragic fate and was determined to join him. He saved her from certain peril, guiding her safely back to shore on his boat.

WINTER WONDERLAND

Winter brought us endless excitement as we tobogganed down the farmhouse hill, aiming to reach the ditch with each slide. The young nephews now carry on the tradition along with countless others such as grape picking to pass down the knowledge. For years, we hand-picked Icewine in sub-zero temperatures, inviting friends to join us while Mom provided snacks to keep us going through the frosty nights.

STEERING THROUGH TIME

The farm holds countless memories that shaped our lives, from Mom’s first farm car, a VW Beetle at 6 years old, to our own early driving adventures. As grandchildren, we had the responsibility of keeping the tractor straight while fruit picking. Poppie’s ingenious extended steering wheel allowed us to stand on the trailer. Together, we contributed to the farm’s success, whether it was steering, grading fruit on the Bartlett line, or sleeping on pear bins. We even competed to crank the vintage tractor, teaching us caution. Amidst it all, family unity and collaboration fostered enduring bonds and cherished moments.

FRUITFULL TRADITIONS

Tales of raising kids on the farm were frequently shared, particularly those involving exploring the grapevines and grasping at the fruits. It must run in our blood. That tradition has been kept alive with getting the young nephews involved in grape picking every year, passing down our family heritage. Today, we proudly contribute to that legacy by producing VQA wines from the fruits of our farm, carrying forward our farm’s essence in every bottle. Our commitment to wine production is a testament to our deep-rooted connection with the land we call home.

HARVESTING MEMORIES

During summer, we embrace Sunday Fundays with family and friends. We gathered to play sports, ride gators and 4-wheelers, relishing in each other’s company on the farm. The breathtaking sunsets are a tradition, pausing to witness the vivid colours as the sun dips below the horizon. A remarkable tale that would be told involved Poppie’s loyal dog, Snoopie, who instinctively trailed him to their other farm across town. Whether guided by memory or scent, Snoopie embarked on his solo journey, finding his way to the neighbouring farm.
